Taking a vacation from Cancer

Today sat down with the cancer doc to chat about where we are at and where we are going. I’ve learned a few things, first the Doc has a mother that is 106 years old. Another interesting Doctor fact is that the length of their white coat used to be a status symbol for doctors. In the NorthEast the shorter the coat the better more important the Doctor was. If you were under 60 and showed up to Harvard in a medical coat that wasn’t below your pants pockets you would get tossed out!

We did talk about the cancer stuff as well. No results yet from the bone marrow biopsy, however given last week’s blood test we are looking at more treatments. I need one of the numbers to get below 10 to be a candidate for the Stem Cell. This number started at over 600, two weeks ago it was at 134 and last week at 84. We are trending in the right direction but not there yet. After vacation I will have a couple more treatments to go before we can declare victory.

I am on vacation starting Thursday and decided to take the two weeks off of treatment. The Doc says my number might bump up a little but not enough to worry about. I’ve started to get fatigued from the treatments specifically in my legs which is a side effect of the steroid. Hopefully This break will rollback some of the side effects of the drugs. The steroids also has “changes in the shape or location of body fat (especially in your arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist)” listed. We have mentioned the Cankles before but I also have a bump on the back of my neck that looks like skull fat. Not a good look. Two weeks off the meds will help me bounce back and also allow me to eat/drink what I want while on vacation. I plan on to keep the cancer off balance during this break with frequent trips to the local breweries.

That’s about it on the update front. Probably won’t have another update for a couple weeks. I go back on treatment the 16th. In the meantime I think this guy wants his ball thrown.
